A Poem :: Silent Fields

The honking chorus, it fades to naught,
My geese, a feathered cloud, they took to flight.
Across the fields where morning dew was caught,
They vanished in the still-dim break of light.

My heart, a leaden weight within my breast,
Where did they go, my silly, snow-white throng?
The empty pen, it echoes their unrest,
A silence where their gabbling did belong.

Did fox with hungry eyes, in shadows creep?
Or did they wander, lured by distant calls?
Across the meadows, searches long and deep,
The hope inside me flickers, almost falls.

With every step, the fear begins to rise,
Were feathers found, or worse, a crimson stain?
Oh geese, please answer to my weary cries,
And let me bring you safely home again.
