Seeking Monday
I wander a foreign land of purple and orange
Tripping over arcane metaphors.
I fall down a rabbit hole, ending up upended.
Cliches shriek: nothing is as it seems!
I seek out optimistic Monday:
A reliable landmark to anchor dreams.
But all I keep meeting is Wednesday
With her black umbrella and lace up boots
And a grim outlook on life.
She directs me a doublecross smile
And tells me this is all there is.
Turning my book to the next page
I find it's blank: ink stains my hands
Yet is invisible on paper.
Sturdy Thursday approaches. We have far to go together,
Standing against forces of anarchy
Threatening to dash our cups of tea to bits.
Friday joins us, steadfast and loyal
A welcome friend to hold the line.
Wednesday takes her place alongside
Wielding her umbrella as a weapon
Against forces far darker than herself.
Will I ever find Monday?
Only time will tell.
24 lines, free verse.
Inspired by the OneRepublic song Dreaming Out Loud.
Prompt:
