Redemption
In a cold, darkened room, three jars sit silent.
Contents compromised beyond redemption:
scarred, malformed--nonresponsive to intervention.
Replaced, no longer functioning as either
pump or emotional container,
naught but specimens earmarked for dissection.
Where once life juices traveled
coagulated blood hides in damaged chamber.
Neophyte's scalpel cuts: flaying
open cardiac organ,
quiet and incapable of song;
exposing nerves of both
although now,
only one vibrates.
Lessons taught, slides viewed,
wall clock beats on: time for another class.
A gloved hand returns fisted muscle to jar.
The student twists the lid closed and walks away.
