Song: "Break Free"
Artist: Colbie Caillat
Album: Gypsy Heart

I've been following Colbie Caillat's music since her debut album Coco in 2007, although I really didn't find a song I loved of hers until "Fallin' For You" off her 2009 sophomore album Breakthrough. I distinctly remember loving the video for that song because she played the part of the attractive girl the guy in the video was after, and I remember thinking it was such a stark contrast from other artists who try to disguise the fact that they're incredibly good looking and pretending like they're an average person in a music video... it was kind of a nice change to have an attractive singer play the part of the one being pursued instead of the other way around when the audience goes, "Oh yeah, like anyone would ever turn down Katy Perry for a date." *Rolleyes*

I've liked several songs on each of her albums, and this one from her 2014 album Gypsy Heart is certainly no exception. Each of her albums has a unique and interesting sound to it, and I think they get better each time. I also really love the song "Hold On"  Open in new Window. that was released in 2013 before her latest album, but "Break Free" is the one that's currently burning up the bit-rate on my iTunes, so I decided to feature that one instead. *Smile*

Song: "Story of My Life"
Artist: Social Distortion
Album: Social Distortion

While we're on the topics of long-standing bands, Social Distortion (formed in 1978) is definitely up there. Fronted by Mike Ness, the group is up there in terms of the number of band members past and present... it's somewhere in the twenties, which brings them up along side longstanding acts like Guns N Roses (22), AC/DC (23), Jethro Tull (24), and Nine Inch Nails (25). They still fall far short of the current record holder though, as Santana has had a whopping 65 members over the course of its career. *Shock*

It was really hard to pick a Social Distortion song to feature for this blog post... I really love "Ball and Chain" and the previously unrecorded song "Far Behind" that they released with their 2007 Greatest Hits album. Heck, if I'm being honest, this is the band that actually introduced me to Johnny Cash, through their cover of his classic "Ball and Chain." Interestingly enough, even though "Story of My Life" is one of the band's most popular and remembered songs (and received heavy airplay when it was released), it actually failed to chart on any of the popular charts. It never even made the list. *Frown*

Song: "I'm in a Hurry (And Don't Know Why)"
Artist: Alabama
Album: American Pride

This song brings back memories for me because it's the first CD I ever stole. *Shock* Okay, well maybe stole is the wrong word, but it's definitely from the first album I "borrowed" from a friend and never returned. It was just one of those things where I really liked the song and he said I could borrow the album and listen to it for a while (this was back before we could rip CDs to our computers and MP3 players), and we both just kinda forgot that I had it until he moved away one day and I realized later the CD was still sitting in my CD rack. Oops. *Blush*

I have no idea how I ever got into country music since no one in my family was a huge fan of the genre... but somewhere along the way I started to like a track or two. It's still not my favorite genre, but I enjoy a good country jam every once in a while. I tend to like the more upbeat country stuff like this song, which was from Alabama's 1992 album American Pride. The band has been around forever, forming way back in 1969 when they performed under the name Wildcountry. They changed their name to Alabama in 1977 and have been recording and touring ever since (with the occasional break). Over the years, the band has racked up over thirty #1 songs and sold over 75 million albums, putting them in the same sales stratosphere and groups like the Police, KISS, Spice Girls, Motley Crue, Green Day, and Nirvana.

Song: "Ghost"
Artist: Ella Henderson
Album: Chapter One

I found this song late last year and really fell in love with it. Ella Henderson first came into the public spotlight when she competed on the ninth season of The X Factor in 2012. Even though she only finished sixth after being considered a heavy favorite, she was signed by Simon Cowell's Syco Music label. Her debut studio album was released in October 2014, and this is the first single and first hit off that album, co-written by OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder. The song debuted at #1 in the UK and became the country's sixth best-selling single of 2014. With a voice like that and considerable success already, it's not hard to imagine that the nineteen year old Ella Henderson could be impressing us with her music and talented voice for some time.

I actually heard this song for the first time during a trip my wife and I took to Portland at the end of October. The single had just been out for a week or so and it was in heavy rotation on whatever contemporary hits satellite radio station was featured in our rental car. After three days of nothing but Ella Henderson and Taylor Swift songs, this one kinda grew on me. *Laugh*
