"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 21
"Anyone"
by Justin Bieber
Full Lyrics ▼
Dance with me under the diamonds
See me like breath in the cold
Sleep with me here in the silence
Come kiss me, silver and gold
You say that I won't lose you
But you can't predict the future
So just hold on like you will never let go
Yeah, if you ever move on without me
I need to make sure you know
That you are the only one I'll ever love
(I gotta tell ya, gotta tell ya)
Yeah, you, if it's not you, it's not anyone
(I gotta tell ya, gotta tell ya)
Lookin' back on my life, you're the only good I've ever done
(Ever done)
Yeah, you, if it's not you, it's not anyone
(Anyone) Not anyone
Forever's not enough time to (No)
Love you the way that I want (Love you the way that I want)
'Cause every morning I find you (No)
I fear the day that I don't
You say that I won't lose you
But you can't predict the future
'Cause certain things are out of our control
Yeah, if you ever move on without me
I need to make sure you know
That you are the only one I'll ever love (Only one)
(I gotta tell ya, gotta tell ya)
Yeah, you, if it's not you, it's not anyone
(I gotta tell ya, gotta tell ya)
Lookin' back on my life, you're the only good I've ever done
(I've ever done)
Yeah, you, if it's not you, it's not anyone
It's not anyone, not anyone
Oh, oh, oh, oh
If it's not you, it's not anyone
Oh, oh, oh yeah, woah
Yeah, you are the only one I'll ever love
(I gotta tell ya, gotta tell ya, yeah)
Yeah, you, if it's not you, it's not anyone
(I gotta tell ya, gotta tell ya)
Lookin' back on my life, you're the only good I've ever done (Ever done, oh, yeah)
Yeah, you, if it's not you, it's not anyone
I have a love-hate relationship with Justin Bieber. Which is to say that I mostly hate him, but I occasionally hate myself for loving one of his songs. Every so often he does manage to come up with a really good song that I find myself listening to on repeat, and this is the most recent one of those songs. I definitely think he's matured as an artist (and only moderately so as a human being), but it's still hard to admit that I actually like a Justin Bieber song in public. Still, I can't deny that ballads like this tend to find their way onto my playlists from time to time.

"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 20
"Lost"
by Blake Rose
Full Lyrics ▼
Coming in off a late night
But I've got no one to lay by
Yeah, what I would do just to kill the wire
Telling me I've got to call
But living without you don't feel right
From the '75 playing the day by
To the cigarettes under the midnights
Yeah, maybe it won't hurt to call
Oh, yeah, you gotta, you gotta
You gotta admit we were so dumb, so dumb
And oh, no, baby, how did we, how did we
How did we manage to mess this up, mess this up?
I'm wide awake missing your face
Missing your taste, wishing you were lost with me
Now I'm driving your way in the middle of the rain
Wishing you were close to me
No, I don't wanna wait
I don't wanna say, "Remember what we used to be?"
'Cause I don't wanna live that way
So tell me that it's not too late
Pulling up on the 1-5
Trying to get you off my mind
Been telling myself that it's a waste of time
But maybe I'm dumb not to call
'Cause, baby, living without you ain't right
From stumbling home after midnight
To seeing the same films a hundred times
Yeah, maybe it won't hurt to call
Oh, yeah, you gotta, you gotta
You gotta admit we were so dumb, so dumb
And oh no, baby, how did we, how did we
How did we manage to mess this up, mess this up?
I'm wide awake missing your face
Missing your taste, wishing you were lost with me
Now I'm driving your way in the middle of the rain
Wishing you were close to me
No, I don't wanna wait
I don't wanna say, "Remember what we used to be?"
'Cause I don't wanna live that way
So tell me that it's not too late
So lost for you, so lost for you
So lost for you, so tell me that it's not too late
So lost for you, so lost for you
So lost for you, so tell me that it's not too late
I'm wide awake missing your face
Missing your taste, wishing you were lost with me
Now I'm driving your way in the middle of the rain
Wishing you were close to me
No, I don't wanna wait
I don't wanna say, "Remember what we used to be?"
'Cause I don't wanna live that way
So tell me that it's not one big mistake
Missing your face
Missing your taste, wishing you were lost with me
Now I'm driving your way in the middle of the rain
Wishing you were close to me
No, I don't wanna wait
I don't wanna say, "Remember what we used to be?"
'Cause I don't wanna live that way
So tell me that it's not too late
So lost for you, so lost for you
So lost for you, so tell me that it's not too late
So lost for you, so lost for you
So lost for you, so tell me that it's not too late
Blake Rose is an interesting artist for me because I actually don't like a lot of his other songs. Usually when I like an artist, I find a handful of songs that I like and listen to after coming across a first song that really speaks to me. In this case, I really, really dig this song, but that's about it. I've tried at least a half a dozen other songs by Blake and I'm not just that into them. Maybe he'll come out with something else that really connects with me but for right now he's a one-hit wonder on my current playlists.

"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 19
"My Heart Won't Let Me"
by LANY
Full Lyrics ▼
You and I always fight 'bout the same old thing
In the car, at the bar, by the kitchen sink
You used to say you want me, now we just say, "Sorry"
You and I always fight 'bout the same old thing
I should've probably already left
But I never listen to my head
Say I'm gonna go, can't take it anymore
Keys are in my hand, got one foot out the door
Every time I try, every time I try to leave
My heart won't let me
Not OK, God I hate, hate the place we're in
But I forget for a sec when I kiss your lips
I should've probably already left
But I never listen to my head
Say I'm gonna go, can't take it anymore
Keys are in my hand, got one foot out the door
Every time I try, every time I try to leave
My heart won't let me
Be the one to quit, I know it's gonna hurt
Lyin' to myself will only make it worse
Every time I try, every time I try to leave
My heart won't let me
My heart won't let me
You used to say you want me
Now we just say, "Sorry"
Why can't I just walk away?
Say I'm gonna go, can't take it anymore
Keys are in my hand, got one foot out the door
Every time I try, every time I try to leave
My heart won't let me
Be the one to quit, I know it's gonna hurt
Lyin' to myself will only make it worse
Every time I try, every time I try to leave
My heart won't let me
My heart won't let me
My heart won't let me
I found LANY on Spotify when I recently started looking for other artists like A R I Z O N A and The Band CAMINO. They popped up with a number of different songs and I've been listening to them a lot lately. I enjoy a good alternative rock love song and these guys have some pretty catchy songs. I haven't listened to a wide variety of their songs yet, though, (just the couple I already know I like), so I think I'm due for a deep dive through their discography at some point.

"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 18
"Unconditionally"
by Katy Perry
Full Lyrics ▼
Oh no, did I get too close?
Oh, did I almost see what's really on the inside?
All your insecurities
All the dirty laundry
Never made me blink one time
Unconditional, unconditionally
I will love you unconditionally
There is no fear now
Let go and just be free
I will love you unconditionally
Come just as you are to me
Don't need apologies
Know that you are worthy
I'll take your bad days with your good
Walk through the storm I would
I do it all because I love you, I love you
Unconditional, unconditionally
I will love you unconditionally
There is no fear now
Let go and just be free
I will love you unconditionally
So open up your heart and just let it begin
Open up your heart and just let it begin
Open up your heart and just let it begin
Open up your heart
Acceptance is the key to be
To be truly free
Will you do the same for me?
Unconditional, unconditionally
I will love you unconditionally
And there is no fear now
Let go and just be free
'Cause I will love you unconditionally (oh yeah)
I will love you (unconditionally)
I will love you
I will love you unconditionally
Bonus points for squeezing a six-syllable word into multiple places in a song and making it sound melodic.
I'm "hot n cold" on Katy Perry (bad pun intended). Sometimes she does songs that I think are pretty unoriginal and, while catchy, not particularly memorable... and at other times she does songs like this one that just somehow strike a chord with me and are something that I end up listening to for weeks and weeks and weeks. I found this song while listening to a playlist of similar songs and haven't been able to stop listening to it since. The music video is also gorgeously shot.

"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 17
"Gonna Get Over You"
by Sara Bareilles
Full Lyrics ▼
Goodbye
Should be sayin' that to you by now, shouldn't I?
Layin' down the law that I live by
Well maybe next time
I've got a thick tongue
Brimming with the words that go unsung
I simmer then I burn for a someone
The wrong one
And I tell myself to let the story end
And my heart will rest in someone else's hand
My 'why not me?' philosophy began
And I say
Ooh, how'm I gonna get over you?
I'll be alright, just not tonight
Someday, oh I wish you'd want me to stay
I'll be alright, just not tonight
Someday
"Maybe"
It's a vicious little word that can slay me
Keep me when I'm hurting you make me
Hang from your hands
But no more
I won't beg to buy a shot at your back door
If I make it at the thought of you, what for?
That's not me anymore
And I'm not the girl that I intend to be
I dare you darling, just you wait and see
But this time not for you but just for me
I say
Ooh, how'm I gonna get over you?
I'll be alright, just not tonight
Someday, oh I wish you'd want me to stay
I'll be alright, just not tonight
Someday
Say it's coming soon
Someday without you
All I can do
Is get me past the ghost of you
Wave goodbye to me
I won't say I'm sorry
I'll be alright
Once I find the other side of someday
Ooh, how'm I gonna get over you?
I'll be alright, just not tonight
Someday, oh I wish you'd want me to stay
I'll be alright, just not tonight
Someday
This is an older song, off Sara Bareilles' 2010 album Kaleidoscope Heart (which I still think is her best album). This song showcases a lot of her strength as a songwriter, combining catchy melodies with really sophisticated lyrics. Honestly, other than maybe Taylor Swift, I think Sara Bareilles is probably one of the most talented singer/songwriters of her generation. She always manages to write complex, evocative lyrics that seem really effortless when she sings them. This is one of the music videos that my kids love to watch over and over again, and I haven't gotten tired of the song yet, which is really saying something given how many times they've asked me to watch it.

"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 16
"Remind Me To Forget"
by Kygo feat. Miguel
Full Lyrics ▼
It never fades away, it's staying
Your kiss like broken glass on my skin
And all the greatest loves end in violence
It's tearing up my voice, left in silence
Baby, it hit so hard, holding on to my chest
Maybe you left your mark, reminding me to forget
It doesn't matter where you are, you can keep my regret
'Cause baby, I got these scars, reminding me to forget
Reminding me, I got these scars, to forget your love
Keep reminding me, ooh, to forget your love
You left your burn (in my heart)
You left your mark, reminding me to forget
You left your burn (in my heart)
You left your mark (I can't understand)
You left your burn (in my heart)
You left your mark, reminding me to forget
You left your burn (in my heart)
You left your mark (I can't understand)
There's no room in war for feelings
Hurt me to the core, still healing
And I know you're no good for me
So I try to forget the memories
Baby, it hit so hard, holding on to my chest
Maybe you left your mark, reminding me to forget
It doesn't matter where you are, you can keep my regret
Baby, I got these scars, reminding me to forget
You left your burn (in my heart)
You left your mark, reminding me to forget
You left your burn (in my heart)
You left your mark (I can't understand)
Remember I told you
To save it, it's over
And I'll be alright
So hurt me as much as you like
I need you to let go
I got these mementos
And I'll be alright
Baby, it hit so hard, holding on to my chest
Maybe you left your mark, reminding me to forget
It doesn't matter where you are, you can keep my regret
Baby, I got these scars, reminding me to forget
You left your burn (in my heart)
You left your mark, reminding me to forget
You left your burn (in my heart)
You left your mark, reminding me to forget
I almost went with one of Kygo's 80s remixes (his version of "Higher Love" with Whitney Houston and "What's Love Got To Do With It" with Tina Turner are both regularly on my playlists), and I actually started writing an entry about his collaboration with Sasha Sloan ("I'll Wait"). But this song has been speaking to me a lot lately and I really try not to do any repeats during "The Soundtrack of Your Life" . I can always appreciate a great voice paired with a savvy DJ/electronic music producer, and I think this song really capitalizes on the strength of both.

"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 15
"long story short"
by Taylor Swift
Full Lyrics ▼
Fatefully
I tried to pick my battles
Til the battle picked me
Misery
Like the war of words I shouted in my sleep
And you passed right by
I was in the alley surrounded on all sides
The knife cuts both ways
If the shoe fits, walk in it
Til your high heels break
And I fell from the pedestal
Right down the rabbit hole
Long story short, it was a bad time
Pushed from the precipice
Clung to the nearest lips
Long story short, it was the wrong guy
Now I'm all about you
I'm all about you
I'm all about you
Actually
I always felt I must look better in the rear view
Missing me
At the golden gates they once held the keys to
When I dropped my sword
I threw it in the bushes and knocked on your door
And we live in peace
But if someone comes at us
This time I'm ready
'Cause I fell from the pedestal
Right down the rabbit hole
Long story short, it was a bad time
Pushed from the precipice
Clung to the nearest lips
Long story short, it was the wrong guy
Now I'm all about you
I'm all about you
I'm all about you
No more keeping score
Now I just keep you warm
No more tug of war now
I just know there's more
No more keeping score
Now I just keep you warm
And my waves meet your shore
Ever and evermore
Past me
I wanna tell you not to get lost in these petty things
Your nemeses will defeat themselves
Before you get the chance to swing
And he's passing by
Rare as the glimmer of a comet in the sky
And he feels like home
If the shoe fits, walk in it
Everywhere you go
And I fell from the pedestal
Right down the rabbit hole
Long story short, it was a bad time
Pushed from the precipice
Climbed right back up the cliff
Long story short, I survived
Now I'm all about you
I'm all about you
I'm all about you
I'm all about you
I'm all about you
I'm all about you
Long story short, it was a bad time
Long story short, I survived
I still can't get over the fact that Taylor Swift dropped not one, but two unplanned albums in 2020. It's a really remarkable accomplishment, and while these two albums aren't necessary my favorites, there are a few songs on each of them that I think are really great and accentuate her talents as a songwriter. Even without a full studio production backing her, she writes affecting, catchy songs. This one is off her second album (evermore) and is probably my favorite from that album, although a few others like "willow" and "'tis the damn season" are good too.

"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 14
"Savage Love (Laxed - Siren Beat)"
by Jason Derulo & Jawsh 685
Full Lyrics ▼
Jason Derulo, ah
Savage love (685, baby)
If I woke up without ya, I don't know what I would do
Thought I could be single forever 'til I met you
Usually don't be fallin', be fallin', fallin' fast
You got a way of keepin' me comin' back-to-back
I just found out, the only reason that you lovin' me
Was to get back at your ex-lover but before you leave
Usually I would never, would never even care
Baby, I know she creepin', I feel it in the air
Every night and every day (Every day)
I try to make you stay, but your
Savage love, did somebody, did somebody break your heart?
Lookin' like an angel, but your savage love
When you kiss me, I know you don't give two fucks
But I still want that
Your savage love
Your savage lo-lo-love
Your savage lo-lo-love
You could use me 'cause I still want that (Your savage love)
Baby, I hope that this ain't karma 'cause I get around
You wanna run it up, I wanna lock it down
Usually don't be fallin', be fallin', fallin' fast
You got a way of makin' me spend up all my cash
Every night and every day (Every day)
I try to make you stay, but your
Savage love, did somebody, did somebody break your heart?
Lookin' like an angel, but your savage love
When you kiss me, I know you don't give two fucks
But I still want that
Your savage love
Your savage lo-lo-love (Oh)
Your savage lo-lo-love
You could use me
'Cause I still want that your savage love
(Ooh la-la-la-la, ooh la-la-la-la)
Your savage lo-lo-love
(Ooh la-la-la-la, ooh la-la-la-la, ooh)
Your savage lo-lo-love
(Ooh la-la-la-la)
You could use me
(Ooh la-la-la-la)
Baby
Savage love (Oh, girl)
Did somebody, did somebody break your heart?
Lookin' like an angel, but your savage love (Savage love)
When you kiss me, I know you don't give two fucks
But I still want that
Your savage love (Savage love)
Your savage lo-lo-love (Ooh, yeah)
Your savage lo-lo-love
Girl, you could use me
'Cause I still want that your savage love
I'm a sucker for a catchy song that causes a fun social media trend. This song reminds me a lot of "Gagnam Style" from PSY a few years ago where it just absolutely blew up and you could find people posting videos of themselves dancing to it absolutely everywhere. And who knows if it'll actually have any staying power or will fade away once the new trendy song pops up, but in the meantime this is a fun one to add to my playlists where I can just enjoy a song that makes me want to dance.
Jason Derulo is a hugely underrated artist, in my opinion. He's a great dancer and has a number of, if not great, than at least really catchy, really well-produced songs. I've been listening to him since "In My Head" and "Ridin' Solo" off his debut album, and each successive album he releases usually has at least one or two songs that I listen to for a decent amount of time.

"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 13
"Light On"
by Maggie Rogers
Full Lyrics ▼
Would you believe me now if I told you I got caught up in a wave?
Almost gave it away
Would you hear me out if I told you I was terrified for days?
Thought I was gonna break
Oh, I couldn't stop it, tried to slow it all down
Crying in the bathroom, had to figure it out
With everyone around me saying, "You must be so happy now"
Oh, if you keep reachin' out
Then I'll keep coming back
And if you're gone for good
Then I'm okay with that
If you leave the light on
Then I'll leave the light on
(Light on, light on, light on)
And I am finding out
There's just no other way
That I'm still dancing at the end of the day
If you leave the light on
Then I'll leave the light on
(Light on, light on, light on)
And do you believe me now that I always had the best intentions, babe?
Always wanted to stay
Can you feel me now that I'm vulnerable in oh so many ways
And I'll never change
Oh, I couldn't stop it, tried to figure it out
But everything kept moving and the noise got too loud
With everyone around me saying, "You should be so happy now"
Oh, if you keep reachin' out
Then I'll keep coming back
And if you're gone for good
Then I'm okay with that
If you leave the light on
Then I'll leave the light on
(Light on, light on, light on)
And I am finding out
There's just no other way
That I'm still dancing at the end of the day
If you leave the light on
Then I'll leave the light on
(Light on, light on, light on)
I'll leave the light on, oh
Would you leave the light on?
If you keep reachin' out
Then I'll keep coming back
But if you're gone for good
Then I'm okay with that
If you leave the light on
Then I'll leave the light on
(Light on, light on, light on)
And I am finding out
There's just no other way
That I'm still dancing at the end of the day
If you leave the light on
Then I'll leave the light on
(Light on, light on, light on)
Oh, if you leave the light on
Then I'll leave the light on
Oh, if you leave the light on
I could have honestly put any Maggie Rogers song from her Heard It In A Past Life album. All of the songs are great and it's honestly a serious contender for the album that I'm going to use for Musicology Anthology this year. Every song is soulful, but each one has a distinctly different sound and really compelling lyrics. She might be one of my favorite new artists that I've discovered in the past six months, and her entire album is featured on just about all of my current playlists.

"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 12
"Lean"
by VHS Collection
Full Lyrics ▼
I wear the clothes of the characters of films that I see
Some say unoriginal, but it works out for me
I collect the labels off the drinks that I drink
So many fluids one would think that I'd sink
It's a fact dear I'm an act here, no camera no stage
Dressed to impress so I can lie about my age
And oh, you gonna lean on your friends
And oh, you did it again
And oh, you gonna lean on your friends
And oh, you did it again
I can't differentiate my dreams from the real
And I can't tell you how familiar it feels
I see the faces as I enter the room
Quite unintentionally, I am a buffoon
It's a fact dear I'm an act here, no camera no stage
Dressed to impress so I can lie about my age
And oh, you gonna lean on your friends
And oh, you did it again
And oh, you gonna lean on your friends
And oh, you did it again
And the beatniks, and the junkies
And if you feed them you flunky
You sing "ooh, ooh, ooh"
There's Paul's house, there's blow there
No we don't go, we stay there and sing:
"Ooh, ooh, ooh"
And the projects and the Charlie's
And the discos and the parties
And the blood streets and the new wave
It's the renaissance of these days
And oh, you gonna lean on your friends
And oh, you did it again
And oh, you gonna lean on your friends
And oh, you did it again
And oh, you gonna lean on your friends
And oh, you did it again
VHS Collection is another of the artists (like A R I Z O N A and The Band CAMINO) that I recently discovered and had a hard time picking just one song to feature because I've been listening to a whole bunch of different songs by them and I like a whole bunch of them. I almost went with "Waiting on the Summer" or "Sign" but ultimately picked this one because it was the song that first introduced me to the band. I think it might've been from an episode of SHAMELESS.
I really dig their retro sound; it's modern, but often feels like I'm listening to a song with 80s influences, which is the music I grew up listening to.
