David Bowie, 2002 – Heroes
He died of cancer in 2016. I thought about him a great deal this past year. His music, his lyrics, his presence and the way he stood out in the crowd. A great musician.

B.B. King, 1993 – The Thrill is Gone
I have seen B.B. King live in the Netherlands in North Sea Jazz festival in Rotterdam. It was 1985 I think. It was with my then-new love Ron. King was larger than life, with his voice, his body, his music. So enormous and engaging. I love his music and the memory of a great time.

Chet Baker, 1987 – Almost blue
Late at night, coffee and a cigarette feeling blue. The perfect atmosphere to listen to Chet who jumped off a window in an Amsterdam hotel in 1988.

Hugh Laurie, 2011 – Saint James Infirmary
Great piece done by the actor Hugh Laurie whom I got to know as Dr. House in the television series. I loved binge-watching the whole series. It took me weeks and weeks of watching. But it was fun, intelligent and I loved this cynical genius.

Nina Simone, Ain’t Got No, I Got Life – 1968
“Why am I alive anyway”
What a wonderful song, what a rhythm, her voice, the sadness of the song, such hope in the end. It’s a song to recite every time you ‘ve seen that black hole in your life and came out of it alive and kicking.

Tracy Chapman, 2009 – Fast Car
“Had a feeling I could be someone”
I still remember when she had her first song, her first album. Just a girl with a guitar, it was so great watching the stillness and hear her voice. It’s all about being young and living life.

America, 1971 - A horse with no name
I was 10 years old when this song saw the light and it’s still a great song to listen to in 2020. I am humming it all day, it’s still a wonderful song. It makes me feel a bit melancholy because of all those years past. Am I that old already? I suppose so.

Rag’nBone Man, 2016 - Human
“Look in the mirror, what do you see?”
I think I heard this song for the first time in a shopping mall. But it stayed with me. Good lyrics, compelling sound, and the clip is great with all those changing faces at the beginning of the song. It’s a positive song. I like it!

LL Cool J, 2009 – Mamma said Knock you out
I love this song, volume up high, pumped up base and my body is moving. Great, great song because of the vibrant energy. The lyrics are right in your face. It’s of a wonderful high sensitivity. Is it HipHop? I am not that familiar with all the different genres, but it’s a wonderful song and I am so glad it got introduced to me by a WdC member.

Pharell Williams, 2014 - Happy
I just found out very late about this soundtrack challenge, but I will try to catch up.
It’s a song from years ago, but I rediscovered it last year and it makes me so happy every time I hear the soundtrack. I am not overly happy by nature but this song, ahhh, it grabs me every time. It’s upbeat, it’s simple, I can easily sing along and the video clip makes me want to jump up and down. I want to dance on this rhythm.
