About This Author
My name is Joy, and I love to write. Why poetry, here? Because poetry uplifts its writer, and if she is lucky enough, her readers, too. Around us, so many objects abound to write about. Once a poet starts with a smallest, most trivial object, he shall discover that his pen will spill out what is most delicate or most majestic hidden inside him. Since the classics sometimes dealt with lofty subjects with a lofty language, a person with poetry in his soul may incline to emulate that. That is understandable. Poetry does that to a person: it enlarges the soul and gives it wings. Yet, to really soar, a poet needs to take off from the ground. Kiya's gift. I love it!

Prompt 11-- In Las Vegas
by Joy Author IconMail Icon
By the booming strip,
on the balcony
sprawled on a chaise,
you watch
the vital current,
incipient and underway,
thinking of yourself as other
since anonymity is a human need.

The shocking fact:
every dollar you spend
at funky bars and restaurants
feeds the monster
with inert uniformity,
and when the deception of the savage
catches your eye,
you refuse the gamble,
like an actor crawling
inside a character.

Stunned faces,
at first flash of eye contact,
wonder about your
Fellinesque pilgrimage,
not grasping
the effects of
tricky winds, black flies,
and that truth depends upon
where you stand.

Still, a place that pains you
is a place you love,
because it has marked you
for good,
even if you haven't mastered
its game and gamble.
