About This Author
My name is Joy, and I love to write. Why poetry, here? Because poetry uplifts its writer, and if she is lucky enough, her readers, too. Around us, so many objects abound to write about. Once a poet starts with a smallest, most trivial object, he shall discover that his pen will spill out what is most delicate or most majestic hidden inside him. Since the classics sometimes dealt with lofty subjects with a lofty language, a person with poetry in his soul may incline to emulate that. That is understandable. Poetry does that to a person: it enlarges the soul and gives it wings. Yet, to really soar, a poet needs to take off from the ground. ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only **

Prompt# 11. Write a poem showing a personal reaction--positive, negative, or in some way you can think of--to a city, any city anywhere.

Vancouver B.C. Canada

It was only yesterday in my mind
Freedom to travel to the hub of the city
parks, beaches or mountian trails

Let's get lost was our game, amoung
Neighborhood friends of yesterday
Leaving home with packed lunch a
Peanut butter an' jelly sandwhich
By dinner time we were miles
From our neighborhood

Tummies rumbling, we are getting hungry
Search for pennies and empty glass coke bottles
Sometimes we were lucky and found a quarter

We surely would have been prime victims
In our city for child abuse of abduction but
Yesterday in our city this was not heard of
How lucky we were to have had our innocence

Yesterday our city was clean no rubbish around
No scribblings of graffetti on public buildings
No needles or condoms to step on in a playground
English was the written word on public signs
Yesterday in our city

Today our city is filthy, it's a concrete jungle
Today I don't live in our city of yesterday
