I think I might have to look up theme. To me a plot point like boy meets girl is a theme. I write dark fancy and I use weather themes in my settings, like a foggy night in a graveyard. I thought theme was a vague term. I understand that if a method works for one writer it might not work for another. I heard some writers use detailed outlines, which will never work for me. If I ponder a story too long, it will ever be written. It'll just keep changing until it becomes something different. I'm just posting the methods that work for me. I can see where Dr Seuss is coming from, though. It's kind of like flushing out a story with elements that are already woven in the dramatic fabric, or starting with broad strokes then stepping back and looking for hidden pictures. It's kind of like painting a gravity, though; I have seen some impressive images, like a roster, done in gravity. Start with a few splashes and with a little imagination and a few well-aimed drops create an image. James Alan Gardner wrote an seminar on writing prose. The advice he gives applies to all types of fiction—not just science fiction, but fiction in general. I use it as a guide. I was promoted for poetry, not prose. It'll take a while before I shine. I still have lots to write first, but applying theory helps me. At least, it did help me with verse. I'll post a link at the bottom. Anyway, he said something about reincorporation in section 4.3. - bringing back elements that are already present in the story. Isn't that kind of like letting the theme grow from the story? If I was writing a boy meets girl story, I think sooner or later there would be reincorporation that builds on the theme. That is my take for now. Art is dynamic, some times it breaks the rules and mixing up things is good as long as it works. Oh the poker terms 'looking up' means to call a bidder to the showdown. I think I'll just go full tilt on this prompt. There are poker term glossaries on-line. http://www.thinkage.ca/~jim/prose/prose.htm#Reincorporation |
