Technically, themes are like man vs. nature, man vs.man, man vs. himself, and I forget the others. Some people might argue those are actually types of conflicts. That said, sounds like you learned writing from the character-based school of thought, which at least is what I was immersed in at FIU when I took creative writing classes there. In my narrative technique course theme was greatly de-emphasized in the writing process. I personally prefer writing that way.
