Dusk was falling ever so quickly as Madi stumbled across the railroad tracks, following them toward the evidence of the distant city lights. She tripped over one of the planks in the darkness. A stone dug into her knee.

"Ouch!" She exclaimed as warm blood ran down her leg.

Ignoring the pain, she continued limping forward. She wanted to get inside the town before darkness completely fell. The sound of owls and crickets already filled the woods that skirted the railroad tracks. A shiver went up her spine at the sounds.

Limbs aching and pants leg soaked through at the knee, she finally came across a paved road that seemed to lead toward civilization. "Finally." She sighed.

Her stomach growled. She patted it softly. "Don't worry. I'm going to feed you soon."

She found the first open restaurant and entered it. Everyone turned to look at her with somewhat hostile eyes. She frowned a little before making her way to the front counter. An elderly woman with a nice face sat behind the cash register. "Hello dear. New to town?" Her voice seemed to imply something.

She pushed the feeling away. "Um yes ma'am. I'm a little lost. You wouldn't happen to have a phone? And maybe some food?"

She smiled. "You're hurt too aren't you?"

Madi glanced down at her leg. "I guess so." She shrugged.

The woman sniffed the air. "Smells good."

Madi's stomach turned uncomfortably.
