I calmly gaze back at the few dozen humans looking at me. They ooh and ahh, children point. This is my lot in life. I suppose it's not a terrible way to live, here in my glass cage. Sometimes, though, I wonder what the oceans might have been like. I was merely a hatchling, making my way to the water when a little boy grabbed me and took me back to a room. His parents were appalled that their son had brought them a wild creature, possibly a protected one. They called the police who in turn called a wildlife specialist. She determined that I wouldn't be able to survive on my own now. And she brought me here. I've been treated well. I don't have to scavenge for my own food, it is given freely. The people who work here are nice. The people who come to see me take my picture and talk to me in hopes that I will come nearer the glass. Still, I sometimes wander what the ocean would be like. |
