As Billy laid in the wheat field, with his head nestled easily upon a nice bundle of his hooded sweatshirt, he watched the field come to life as if dancing in the wind. It always looked like waves of water crashing in the surf. It is now a week after Graduation and the thought of moving back to the small town of Elgin, IL, which he had lived his whole young life seemed almost surreal. He had been given the lease to his Grandparents farm, which was where his grandparents had lived for 75 years. Billy needed some fresh air after cleaning around the house. He went outside, where across the lawn, was a 5 acre golden-brown wheat field. He had stepped a couple of feet in it when he heard a familiar bark from somewhere in the middle of the field. His parents had thought about not actually giving the place to him just yet, and by rights he had a good two years left before he was legally supposed to receive it. However, he held up his side to the bargain and finished high school. Now, with the help of Gemma, his always faithful golden retriever he was going to run the place. He smiled at the memory of his Grandfather teaching him about what a man does on a wheat farm when there is wheat to collect. “You get up at the crack of dawn.” He would say. “When you get up, you stay up, and work until the day’s light is gone” He told Billy, wearing his blue overalls over a clean white t-shirt. |
