In my opinion yes, you should! I'd write up a back story anyhow just for my own notes. For me when I write a back story I learn things I never knew before about my characters so you never know what may become relevant to your current book even though you're kinda planning for a different one. It definitely can't hurt, and like you said if things change it may come in handy!! I actually plan to go back (if time permits) and write back stories for all of my characters, even the minor ones. I've had some interesting things come up for character development that has changed the whole dynamic of a character for me, but in a good way!
