I like taking my time with the prep not because my brain doesn't think very fast, so much as, I like to give my ideas time to simmer. The creative process is much enhanced when I start dreaming about my characters! I wake up in the morning and lie in bed devising explanations for my plot holes and background stories that explains it all, and I feel like I wouldn't have that if I rushed it. I wouldn't be nearly as invested in the story. Truth be told, I wasn't even going to nano this year because it's a busy year at work, but now that I've been prepping all month, I couldn't imagine NOT writing this in November. :)
