I wouldn't say that the record companies withhold rights to lyrics for greed alone. They're representing people who wrote the lyrics, just as we are writing our own stories. Someone put a lot of thought and time into crafting that. A few lines may not seem like much to us in the vastness of our novels, but to a lyricist, those few lines are a large chunk of their work.
