Kris,

I am thinking that the "bad guy" wouldn't know about the bounty placed on him or would he? That matters, if he comes back to the US knowing that information the reader will need to understand why it was so necessary for him to return. Is this a cat and mouse, catch me if you can making it a large and critical part to your story?

Shoot outs are messy, difficult to technically accurate (unless you have access to a police officer etc. who will explain weapons, how they are loaded, reloaded, how they work etc.). I think there are many ways to capture/corner so that surrender or loss of life are the only options. Perhaps getting him to surrender is only possible by holding the one he loves (probably why he came back in the first place?).

You are only limited by your imagination and for me gun fights are not imaginative but they are a quick solution if this is a minor blip on the radar vs. a big moment in your story.

Good Luck
