LinnAnn, this is a great question and something I struggle with as well. Sometimes I identify specific phrases that particular characters like to use (Mildred often says, "Aw, nuts!" Sometimes it's vocabulary: a college professor will generally use much more formal language than a farmer. Another trick I've used is wordiness: some characters are really verbose and repeat themselves a lot by saying the same thing over and over in different ways (lol), and others barely do more than grunt. Sometimes personality comes into play: a positive, optimistic character is much less likely to spend time griping about a mean teacher or boss, whereas a Debbie Downer is unlik LinnAnn, who are your characters? Anyone else have thoughts? Cheers, Michelle |
