Readability Rabbit Hole

Okay. So... I heard most popular novels are on an eighth grade reading level. It was years ago. I don't have access to a bunch of text to shove into the readability calculator that was posted earlier.

http://read-able.com/check.php

I also did one on both to see the differences between the sites found by Ida.

Luckily Project Gutenberg is digitizing all the older books, so it wasn't too difficult to get some samples. I might have to delve deeper for a personal curiosity thing, but here's an overview of what I've figured out so far.

Frankenstein - grade 10
Dracula - grade 9
Moby Dick - grade 10
Wuthering Heights - grade 9
Jungle Book - grade 8
Fall of House of Usher - grade 12
Anne of Green Gables - grade 8
Wizard of Oz - grade 6
Storm Front - grade 6
Ghost Story - grade 5
Twilight - grade 6 (tested this one with both counters. The Flesh Kincaid grade level comes back 4.7 and 4.9, although I pasted the same text in both and both gave an averaged level of grade 6.)

https://www.lexile.com/ was mentioned in the first article I sent to Michelle, and it has information that doesn't quite concur with the grade levels. However, I think Ray Bradbury wrote between 7th and 8th grade level on the same scale, as well as Margaret Atwood, Margaret Mitchell (gone with the wind), Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, and Arthur C. Clarke. I know most of those are focused into an area of speculative fiction... but if you want to look up others, feel free.

I think I've had all I can manage for the morning. *Cool*
