Do you have any idea how many people are in the world? This is another reason I just want to when a writer refuses to identify a target audience on the basis that they want to target all readers. The world has 7 billion people in it, and if my quick Google search is correct, 26% of those are literate. If those writers honestly believe they're going to sell 1.8 billion copies, they're deluding themselves. Here's the thing about niche markets, whether you're selling books or creepy graveyard home decorations or rare coins: the people who are looking for your product will find you if you make your product accessible. I think what you need to do is spend some time concentrating on marketing and promotions. Start a a blog - not a WDC blog, but a public blog - where you publish some of your work, to give the public a taste of your product, and find a nest egg of a following. I'm willing to brainstorm with you for suggestions on how to find your market. Trust me: it's out there. Be prepared for haters and learn to ignore them. They might actually inadvertently help you grow your following, though, because people are drawn to the morbid and shocking. They might share it just to say, 'OMG, can you believe this author?!' and not realize that one of their social media followers is the perfect target audience for you. But you might have to deal with the haters to reach them. Cheers, Michelle |
