So, I've manged to do it again. Yet again I've managed to pick the Jane Austen challenge over at "a very Wodehouse challenge" Last time it was Princess Megan Snow Rose 's Jane Austen MB, this time it's ~Minja~ 's Jane Austen World MB. I've read most of Austen's work (I don't recall ever reading Persuasion), originally when I was in secondary school for pre-20th century English lit., but I still read her occasionally. I'm certainly not a fan of her work on the scale of Megan or Minja, but I enjoy her novels. I've never seen any of the film or TV adaptations, and don't have any burning desire to. Far too often, film and TV has left me very disappointed in the way they handle the original story - either too much gets cut out, or too much gets re-written, so it ends up being nothing like the original. Enough about me. I've also got to share something Jane Austen related with the group. There's probably not much I can share with everyone that you don't already know. How about this: the Oxford English Dictionary credits Jane Austen as the first recorded author to use over forty English words never used before, including door-bell, double-bed, spongecake and dinner-party. Or this: I'm sure everyone knows that Jane Austen's works were published anonymously during her lifetime, but did you know that Pride and Prejudice was simply attributed to "The Author of Sense And Sensibility" Or there is the somewhat less that stellar: her novels were so hated by Mark Twain (Samuel Clements), that he once remarked that an ideal library is one “that does not contain a volume by Jane Austen”. ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** |
