I think it's your preference as to what works for you - I like your thinking about the notebook for your travel-based novel.

I also have a different type of story; actually, it's several interlinked short stories. I use two comps when I write (not at the same time) with different wordprocessing programs on each comp. So for me it's easier to take pencil to paper for a project like this, daily writing exercises for a month..

I'm using a three ring binder, flexible cover, that I can carry about with me. I start each day's exercises on a fresh page, date it and write - I can go back later as the stories unfold and the characters define themselves to scratch out, add notes, draw lines, go from protagonist in one tale to antagonist in another, perchance. Also add, move, edit pages as we weave the stories (my characters and I)

I can participate still in the contest rounds by posting to a static item at Writing.Com and printing a copy that I can punch and insert into my binder.

This, I believe, will give me flexibility as to when and where I write for this singular project.

When it comes time for NaNo (I'm registered on their Rebel forum), I'll have the background and ideas to be able to park and type.
