For me, instead of picking an audience based of demographics, I chose to pick my audience based on common likes. I want a group of people who enjoy violent stories that lean more toward horror than romance. This can include someone like me, a 31 yr old white woman who's married and owns a house, and it can include a 17 year old boy who's in college and gay. Our external characteristics rarely dictate what we'll enjoy when it comes to reading. The same goes for if you own a home or not, or how much money you make. There are doctors who love Harry Potter, and teenagers who love medical dramas. So for me, it's best to sort people by what they like, and not by how they look.
