Definitely! I never actually put a ton of thought into my "theme" while brainstorming. I was so caught up in the world and characters, I lost sight of "why". Once I began trying to figure out what my character wanted and what growth I expected her to attain, ideas came flowing. She also gained more flaws. She's insecure, relies on the obvious thing that makes her special (a bit of magical ability that is fairly rare), and desires the approval of specific people to feel good about herself. And, the overall moral of the story is both what allows her to win and what foils the antagonist in the end. Several people try to use her as a pawn to gain power for themselves. In the end, she gives up her magic ability and, due to the origin of her ability, it transfers to the antagonist, freeing him and ending a sort of stasis that he's been caught in thus making him mortal, allowing him to be stopped once and for all.
