Oh, sure. Again, I'm fine with chronology shifts; it just needs to be clear. There are many ways to do this, the most obvious of which is to timestamp the scene. That's knocking the reader over the head, though; there are more subtle ways, like including characters we know are dead in the "present," referencing certain music or hairstyles, having news playing in the background with something like, "This morning, President Nixon said..." etc. The point is, it can be obvious without being clumsy, and it can be subtle without being confusing. Which is a lesson some journalists still need to learn. |
