Jane Austen
by A Non-Existent User
This is what I know about Jane Austen: She was born at Steventon, Hampshire in the year1775. She grew up in the quiet country parish of her father Rev. George Austen in a family where literature was their main and only amusement. She had 5 older brothers, and she wrote for pleasure during her childhood. Her novels give importance to its plot and always has given importance to its characters. Its is usually cast in the form of Comedy of manners: accuracy of social behaviour and dialogue, moral realism, the elegance of style . Here you can see the themes of 1. Marriage relations 2.Property rights 3. Reason v.s. Passion 4. French ideals v.s. English ideals 5.The necessity of creating hierarchy and class awareness Her novels : Sense and sensibility(1811): A bildungsroman novel on two sisters Elinor and Marianne. Pride and Prejudice(1813): It is a simple novel that has a well-managed gaiety to it. Mansfield Park(1814): it is a very serious novel, which gave Jane recognition as an Author. Emma(1816): It is a classic Victorian novel which shows the economical symmetry and its Augustan influence. Northanger Abbey(1818): You can clearly see the silliness of the Gothic in this novel. Persuasion(1818): this is a very touching and interesting novel about the story of Anne Elliott. |
