Another option is to find something close to what you have in mind for a character and then search for a free but safe and reliable program to make needed changes like a free version of photoshop, there is one for apple I can't think of the name right now, and there are many others. Sometimes there are low-cost programs that have a great many features. Usually, there is something that comes pre-loaded on whatever computer you have that can be used to a limited extent to make changes. Paintbrush can be used to make simple images and other stuff. I may be able to find some information to remind me about more of the programs available later today.
