Some projects we learn from even if we don't finish them. I know I've learned from every project I've done, even if I didn't complete it, even if I completed a draft but didn't do much with it after. So what have you finished recently? I know a couple brilliant short story writers who insist on trying novels, but struggle with them. Do you work better in another form, and would it be better to string a few short stories together like a novel instead of attempting the really really long haul? Also, if you've finished a couple assignments - WOW. That's a great start. If you're feeling meh about them, remember they're for you and they can change if necessary. Make this the book you've always wanted to read. I can't guarantee you'll finish, but I know going through all of the Prep will get you a lot farther than if you don't. As for the projects in the neglected pile of unfinished imaginings, do you need to finish them? Are they grabbing at you, or is it just the fantasy ghost of never succeeding? Because I would vote to let them be the projects you learned from and consider them stepping stones to the first book you finish. I promise we all have them - bits and pieces that never grew into what we originally envisioned. I know you can do better this time and I support you deciding whether to continue this project or choosing a different path but not because you failed other projects - just decide on this one. |
