Where to start a story can be complex and confusing. My advice is in the first draft, start the story wherever you want. When you finish the draft you will realise that the story might need to start later or earlier. An example in my own published work would be Under Ground. The first draft started earlier in the day, setting up the characters before the party before the building collapse which leads to the lizard-men attack. It dragged, so the second draft started at the party instead, some hours later. Still didn't work, therefore the third draft started with the aftermath of the kiss that took the two MCs away from the building, and that's where it started. More than 5k words dumped, but that's because it was completely irrelevant. So, remember your current starting point might not be the final starting point... Otherwise... here's one I prepared earlier! |
