I also often try to use both ideas when I can't decide on something. I once couldn't decide if a character should be angry or should just not care about a hitchhiker threatening to kill them. I ultimately decided that at first, she didn't care if she lived or died, then as she and he continued to interact, she gets mad at him because she'd been nice enough to pick him up and this is how he repays her? It can be interesting trying to use both ideas when you can't decide. Perhaps your detective has a law enforcement newsletter they write or write for. Maybe they were a journalist before and decided they were tired of reporting the bad news and they wanted to do something about it. Maybe they have a sibling they've confided in about the (attempted) murder and that sibling is whatever profession the protagonist isn't. There's lots of ways you can combine the 2 ideas, if you can't decide. |
