One way to find issues is to ask questions as if you know nothing about the subject/story. Another consideration is taking stock of how you feel while reading your story and what questions pop into your head. You know the story and the reader does not, so sometimes more information or information presented differently will make a good difference. One trick I use when editing stories is to imagine what my words show. I try to feel the story and also put myself in the place of the character and/or reader as much as possible. I've had characters do things I didn't expect and if this works for the story I let ti go, but if it causes issues I look to see what did or did not happen to cause this challenging situation. Sometimes the characters know best and reworking some parts of the story creates a much better reading experience.
