Central International Airport This choice: They jumped out of the plane, but missed the raft and ended in the ocean. • Go Back... Hoping for the best, Justin and his fellow passenger aimed for the raft and jumped through the open door. Wind resistance grabbed their bodies, immediately slowing them relative to the remains of the doomed aircraft. To Justin, it was just like one of those skydiver films, when one chute deploys and seemingly yanks the person upward and away from the camera at terrific speed.
In the scant seconds before their own impact, they watched the nose of the fuselage smash into the ocean and send a huge spray of water in all directions. A glint of yellow at the edge of the spray captured their attention; the life raft! The storm's wild winds had combined with the falling plane's slipstream to carry the life raft almost to the point of impact. Horrified, they saw the plane tip sideways and directly onto the raft. Their only hope of rescue was gone! They slammed into the water and the woman screamed as the waves closed over their heads...
Justin jerked upright. His heart was racing, he was panting in terror, and his shirt and pants were cold and wet. He looked around wildly, trying to make sense of his surroundings. What happened to the plane's disintegration and the plunge to his death in the cold ocean waters? Then it came to him. The storm had bounced the plane around in the sky so much, he had taken an anti-nausea pill, then stupidly tossed down half the drink he'd ordered before the turbulence had interfered with in-flight service badly enough to stop it altogether. The turbulence had bounced the glass out of the tray table's cup-holder and into his lap, weaving itself into the disastrous scenario that had just been a terrifying dream!
Okay, Justin, get a grip! he told himself. He glanced over at Spider; the man appeared to be sound asleep. He looked around the rest of the First Class cabin, and saw that, now that the ride had smoothed out, the droning of the plane's jets had finally put everyone else to sleep, too.
He decided to go the the lavatory and try to get some of the booze out of his shirt and pants, as he had no wish to smell like a bum the rest of the way to Hawaii, unless absolutely necessary. He climbed carefully over his seatmate, then headed up the aisle. As he reached the stairway to the upper deck lounge, he paused. Do I dare? How long could I look around, before someone shepherded me back downstairs? indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
