Central International Airport This choice: Go out the back door and down to the jetty, onto her fathers boat • Go Back...Chapter #8Making Waves by: Unknown The first thing that popped into her mind was the jetty she had fond memories of diving off as a young child. She remembered her father had a number of boats but she hadn't been to the mansion in so long, and wasn't sure if her father had either, that she wondered if there was anything there at all but there wasn't a lot of time to wonder as the footsteps were now out on the landing.
Kanya's eyes went to the back door, it was getting dark outside and this proved ideal, there were plenty of bushes beyond that door so even if the boat idea proved to be a dead end at least they could hide out in the garden until their intruder went away.
"Let's go." Kanya hissed jumping up from her position and pulling on Justin's hand. She yanked him hard towards the back door trying to be as quiet as possible.
There was a key in the lock and Kanya turned it with ease opening the back door and walking onto the veranda. The cold wind began biting at Kanya's body and she wished she had had time to grab her coat which she knew was drapped over the back of the chair in the kitchen. She shivered, partly from the cold but partly out of fear.
"We're not going to stand here forever are we?" Justin leant over and whispered in her ear.
Kanya snapped back into the present and hurried them both off the veranda leading Justin down the garden as close to the hedge rows as possible just in case they needed cover. Thankfully the sky was turning black now so they were unlikely to be seen.
She remembered the jetty being to the left of the house, through the paddocks that led straight to the water. There was a small boathouse off the jetty and Kanya hoped it wasn't occupied, she really had no idea how her father handled the mansion anymore. It was long in the past.
"Are we headed for the water?" Justin asked in a hushed tone.
"My father owns a few boats, there is a jetty on the water I remember as a child, I'm hoping that one of those boats is going to be there." Kanya didn't know if she was trying to convince herself or Justin.
"There's a boathouse there right? I think I know what you're talking about? Didn't that jetty burn down in a fire a few years back?" These were words that Kanya didn't want to hear.
"A fire? Are you sure?"
"I'm pretty sure, your father has many enemies Kanya, you shouldn't be surprised." Justin was close behind Kanya now, she could feel his breath on her neck, it was a little un-nerving but she was glad she had someone there, the darkness wasn't exactly her best friend.
"Well if you're right then I've made a bad decision in coming down here, there isn't anyway back without going back through the house."
They had just reached the paddock and Kanya breathed a sigh of relief to see it had overgrown and that they would be able to seek cover if need too, the long grass provided enough camouflage.
"Let's hurry it up a bit." Justin said taking the lead and clasping Kanya's hand tighter. He was looking behind him a little too nervously so Kanya was only glad to be rushed along.
And it wasn't long before Kanya could smell the sea breeze and taste the salt on her tongue. It flashed images through her mind taking her straight back to her childhood. She saw her father tying up his little dory after a early dawn fishing trip, she saw her mother dangling her legs over the side of the jetty smiling as she watched her children swim in the cool water, and then she saw her brother, Marcus dive bombing from the edge of the jetty but not returning to the surface. She shivered at this last memory, her sweet thirteen year old brother took from them so young. One of the many reasons Kanya had locked away the mansion from her mind.
"Kanya look, the jetty..." Justin's voice splintered through her thoughts and stopped the tears that threatened to spill. She hadn't thought about Marcus in so long.
Kanya opened her eyes wide and turned towards Justin's pointed finger, there was the jetty.... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
