Central International Airport Chapter #9In-flight Entertainment...Seems I remember a bag by: Unknown I nonchalantly drifted out of my seat. I could hear snores as most passengers decided to sleep much of the flight. The perfect chance, I considered, to investigate the carry on luggage. I was intrigued as to what was in the bag that was stored beneath the aircraft. The corriders were surprisingly wide and I was comfortable in my search. After an exhausting stroll from one end of the plane to the other end, I discovered a miniature set of stairs that led to the underbelly of the aircraft. I slowly inched my way down and had no problem finding the luggage in question. Shocking! There was no locking device on it. I opened the zipper.
"Miss?" I jerked my head toward the sound. It was a small child I had talked to on the tarmac. "Are we in trouble?" She inched toward me, her eyes wide. Inside the luggage, my fingers had detected a faint vibration. I winked at the child to stay my own fears as well as hers. I glanced down into the luggage. There was definitely some type of electrical device.
"Come here," I whispered to the child. She obediently moved toward me. I glanced quickly all around until my eyes locked onto one of the emergency parachutes that were placed randomly throughout the aircraft.
She would never have a chance if she had to dive from an aircraft in motion. But if there was an explosion and the aircraft lost its forward motion, the child might have a chance of survival. I locked the tiny chute around the even tinier body. Wordlessly, she nodded as if she understood and stood very still at the emergency door I placed her in front of. I looked directly at the chute cord. I held up each finger on one hand and mouthed slowly, "One...Two...Three.." while my other hand tightened on the cord of her parachute. She nodded with each count. At "five" I pressed her fingers against the metal ring of the chute-pull and she nodded quickly and repeatedly. As I looked away to mentally challenge my next step, "BOOOOM!!!" The little girl was instantly sucked out of my grasp and out the vacuum of the emergency door as it blew out. I witnessed the child as she nodded each count to "Five" and pulled hard. My heart soared as the red, white, and blue silk unfolded in brillant declaration of rescue. The little girl looked directly at me, her tiny hand, now empty, opened and closed her fingers in her grateful goodbye. |
