Chapter #4

Escape

    by: Unknown
Kanya listened as the driver's side door opened, then slam shut. She cringed as the door on her left opened up and a strong arm reached in and jerked her out of the car. "Hey, watch it! I thought we're in this... " Kanya choked off in midsentence after meeting Justin's cold hard stare. His freckles didn't seem too friendly now as his icy green eyes stared into her brown eyes.
Justin grabbed her arm, just above the elbow, in a vicelike grip and lurched towards the drab, rundown mansion's doors with Kanya in tow.

In the front foyer, Kanya was pleasantly suprised at the drastic change in decor. The front foyer was awash in the bright orange glow of setting sunlight. She felt as if she had stepped into Tara, the southern plantation from "Gone in the Wind" There were gilded mirrors and filagree sconces lining the walls, dark mahogany panels lined the lower halves of the walls down to the bright marble floor. Justin stood and fumbled with the keyring but kept his grip on Kanya, he nimbly fingered a single key apart from the rest and tugged Kanya down the hallway. "Just stay cool and you'll stay alive" thought Kanya to herself. They stopped at a narrow mahogany door and Justin slid the key into the lock in the doorknob, twisted his wrist, and pulled open the door in one smooth motion.

The basement stairs looked dark and omnious and a feeling of dread and panic washed over Kanya again and she stiffened up and recoiled. "Now just wait! Whatever happened to discussing our next course of action?" she protested.

Kanya's primal 'fight or flight' reflexes kicked in and she jerked her elbow back as hard as she could and wrenched free of Justin's clenched fingers. "No, please listen..." Justin started to plead but was cut off as the palm of Kanya's flat hand rammed his nose with a sickening crunch. He dropped to his knees and held himself up on one hand while the other hand fingered gently over his now throbbing face, blood trickling between his fingers.

Kanya spun around towards the entrance and bounded out the door like a deer escaping hunting hounds. She started towards the SUV parked in the curved drive when she suddenly remembered that Justin still had the keyring, she abruptly changed directions towards the carport where she had spied the other SUV.

Kanya yanked open the driver's door and clambered inside. She checked the ignition for a key, but there was none. She pulled down the visor but nothing happened. "Life is certainly not like the movies" she muttered to herself.

Looking out the windshield she glimpsed a Honda XR 350 enduro motorcycle leaning against the side of the ramshackled carport. "Just like home" she muttered as she jumped out of the van and raced around to the bike.
