Central International Airport London was grey, watery, a painting created with a colour pallette which had become obscured, the reds and blues and greens swirled together into one dreary shade.
Black cabs, the kind she had seen in films lined up outside the airport entrance like giant beetles. Jessica got in one, hauling her suitcase in after her and gave the name of her hotel to the driver, the one she would be staying in until the morning to catch her delayed connecting flight to Paris.
"Ah, from the states are you?" The taxi driver said to her smuggly, as though he had just produced the answer to a very difficult sum. He pulled out of the airport onto a grey road.
"Yes" She replied flatly
"What brings you to London? On holiday?"
Jessica started to speak and then changed her mind. She couldn't be bothered to explain.
"Yes" She replied again. The driver fell silent, evidently bored with the one sided conversation. Fortunately for them both, the hotel was only a short drive. She paid the driver, the strange bank notes she had changed her dollars for seemed odd, like they were not real money. She was trying to mentally calculate the exchange rates in her head but it made her feel irritated so she handed him one of the notes and told him to keep the change. He seemed pleased.
The hotel, to match its surroundings was another grey and fairly nondescript building, the something lodge, she made out through the drizzle, shivering in her thin jacket. The reception area was cold and bleak. Everything clean but devoid of character, like a chain store. The receptionists all wore uniforms the same colour as the decor.
Jessica glanced at the clock behind the desk as a girl about the same age as her handed over a key with a giant red plastic tag on it stating "112" 12.34 PM, Another 18 hours before her flight to Paris. Her heart fell, what was she going to do now?
