Chapter #3

Kanya and the Boys

Then there was no time to wonder about anything anymore, no time to do anything, no time to think, it was all, all over even before it had ever really begun. The police (they were mostly faceless, like Raul) bustled around Kanya, tugging her aside until she was in the middle of them, smothered by them like a cotton ball in the middle of a deep, dark night. She had no doubt that somehow Raul had extended his reach while she'd been gone. These were his goons, of course they were.

Raul had a practical hierarchy. When he was present, he was in charge. When he wasn't, the goons organized themselves according to size. It was best that way. The big guys always took charge, while the little guys kind of hung around the edges of the action like flies circling, or maybe like moths flapping against the scalding surface of a lightbulb, singing their wings. Of course nothing had changed. Raul was nothing if not predictable. Kanya was held in check by the big guys while the wee scrawny ones (they all had slicked-back hair, real bullet-headed goombahs) circled slowly around, cutting off any possible avenues of escape.

One of the big guys spoke. He was, apparently, not only big but dumb, as he was crossing Raul too. "Listen," he breathed into Kanya's ear. "We both know you're had, you've had it. But I'll tell you what. Let's all of us keep playing cops and robbers for awhile, and you give me those goodies you got up under your dress, and maybe I'll see what I can do about getting you out of this thing alive, whattya say?"

It was a good thing for this big goon bastard that the other goons couldn't hear him, Kanya thought, and that was what gave her the idea, the trick to pull to get out of this mess. That littlest bastard, for example, he looked like he could be particularly greedy. He looked like a wet rat in a small blue suit. Kanya shook herself with dignity. Her eyes gleamed, amused.

The big goon took the hint and grinned hugely. He really was dumb. "I want half, too," he said. "What you got from Raul, I want half of it. Elsewise me and the boys do what he says, take you down to the rivah and fit you for a Hefty bag."

You have the following choices:

*Noteb*
1. Kanya spills the beans to rat-man

2. Kanya plays it cool

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
