Chapter #5

Portal: Heaven or Hell?

    by: ❀Leger❀
As Kanya walked down the ramp into the sunshine, she could hear the voices ahead of her.

"I told you, I didn't do anything!"

"Look buddy, you're going back, no matter what you say."

"Damn it! I don't want to go back." Kanya could hear the frustration in his voice.

The cop was unsympathetic. "We got our orders. Stop struggling."

Kanya was following the voices down a gravel path. She could hear their shoes crunching in the stone. Fascinated, she stayed close.

"All right. You know your way back to the bungalow. We have to get back to the city. You left the portal open and now we have to spend the rest of the month chasing down residents. When will you people learn? There's no leaving this place. Ever." The cops had doubled back and now passed Kanya on the path. They didn't give her a second look. Apparently she passed as a resident.

She caught up to the resident. He was sitting on the ground in front of a small grass shack. He looked very dejected.

"Are you okay?" Kanya knelt down beside him.

He growled from behind his arms, which were crossed over his knees, with his head resting on his forearms. "Fine."

"Anything I can do?" She felt sorry for him.

He picked up his head and stared at her. "Did you follow those cops down the airport ramp?" He grabbed her arms tightly. "Tell me you didn't." Desperation crept into his voice.

"Yeah, I did. You seemed like you needed help." She tried to shrug free of his grip. It was starting to bruise.

"Are you kidding? You just locked yourself in hell, lady!" He shouted as he shook her, then freed her arms.

Kanya brushed wrinkles from her sleeve. "Of course I'm not kidding. What do you mean, hell?"

He groaned as he stood. "There's no way out of here."

"I'll follow the path and go back out the ramp door." She laughed at his ludicrous statement.

He shook his head slowly. "No, no, it doesn't work that way. The portal only works in one direction."

Dread filled Kanya. "One way?"

He nodded.

"So where is the exit? I need to catch a flight." She stood and looked around. All she could see was jungle and a glimpse of beautiful white sand beach.

He shouted in her face. "There is no exit! They closed the one I found."

Kanya shrugged. "Well, this isn't the worst place to be stuck." She slung off the backpack from her back. She had a bathing suit in there. "I never have time to sunbathe, I guess I do now."

"You don't get it, do you?" He screamed. "It's forever."

She calmly turned and looked at him. He was tall, well muscled and his beard was a shade darker than his blonde hair. "Is that so bad?" She looked over his shoulder at the shimmering blue water. Could this be any worse than the life she left behind when she fled to the airport? "How long have you been here...uh, what is your name?"

"Rick. Rick Norrison. I've been here four years, from what I could figure, once I got through the exit portal." His eyes were pained. "And yes, it is. But I guess you'll find that out, won't you?"

"I guess so." Nonplussed, she tossed the comment over her shoulder as she stepped into the shack to change. "Wanna go for a swim?" She disappeared into the dark recess of the shack.

"Are you crazy?" Rick followed Kanya inside.
