Belief in Something Greater An acrostic poem about an alien birthday gift.
BELIEF IN SOMETHING GREATER THAN OURSELVES
B irthday present arrives
E arly one morning
L ight had just dawned over
I ndianapolis, Indiana
E veryone thought it was a
F ire in the sky
I nto the atmosphere the ship came
N earing the earth until it stopped
S ome gathered close by
O thers kept their distance
M ystery and anxiety were high
E xtraterrestrials were actually here
T hey weren't green or gray as some would suppose
H ot pink, actually, like a brand new highlighter
I nto our world they brought a gift for our people
N othing so plain as a card or a basket, but rather technology to
G uide our path toward reaching for the stars
G overnment officials immediately saw the potential
R aced to protect it with secrets and security
E arthlings are silly, the aliens said with confusion
A liens all share with each other, why are you different?
T echnology should be used by humans one and all
E veryone working toward a similar goal, to
R each beyond our own solar system
T here were so many worlds to see and explore
H undreds of species to meet and share with
A n opportunity for humanity to join with the others
N o longer restricted by technological restraints
O pportunity they gave us
U nderstanding is what we needed
R evolutionary technological advancements
S eemed to be their gift, but with
E very human now looking to the stars
L ives changed, inspiration struck
V ibrancy returned to our dreams, and
E .T.'s gift became more than just technology. It was belief, in
S omething greater than ourselves
