as I come to grips
with who and what I am,

The Beast in the Basement

Far from the least
of my problems, just the single
largest one, involves that beast
of a furnace that feels it must mingle-
mangle my nights. Ferocious alligator
demaning that we revere and admire
its rusted torso, its noxious carburetor
breath. My fondest desire
would be to show
that twist-
ed, bellowing furnace--where to go!
It's on my list--
oh, to send it flying
off to the scrap heap, bleeding fuel and silently, dying.
