She agrees to be his tour guide

Before Helen could answer, a rather loud snore, which came from the middle seat, startled both of them. It was Spider who apparently had fallen asleep and was now shocking most of the passengers in the near vicinity with occasional, but for a tired, over-worked scientist like Justin, much too frequent breathing vibrations. The next one sounded a bit like a very tiny chainsaw, which one would use to cut a branch in half.

As Justin, fascinated and a bit concerned at the same time, was just about to put his hand on Spider's shoulder to wake him up, Helen quickly but gently grabbed Justin's arm.

"No. Let him sleep.", Helen said. "... At least we won't have to hear him talking then."

Justin smiled. It was hard for him to keep it that way, since he was fighting the urge to let out a more noisy laughter. So, he just nodded to her and said: "You're right... He is somewhat of a big talker."

"Yeh... I mean, don't get me wrong. People like that do have their charms, but all in moderation I guess."

"True. Feels like, he has been talking to me for hours, but we've only been in the air for about half an hour, right?"

"Yeah, I couldn't help but overhear some of it. I was sitting here, thinking 'Shut up and give the other man a chance to participate in the talk'... Anyway, you asked, if I could show you around on Hawaii, right?"

"Yes. Yes, I did.", Justin confirmed. But just as he had spoken the words, he thought of Betty. He hadn't called her, since he read that note, and now this woman who was standing and chatting with him had enchanted him completely, although just for a few seconds. But then he thought to himself: I don't need to feel bad about this. All, I did, was ask for a tour guide, and Lord only knows, I could use someone who isn't hyper focused on work for Ararat to show me around in my spare time. This is, after all, hopefully going to be more vacation than work.

"Well, there is a lot to see on Hawaii...", Helen said after a short pause. "... But sure. Do you have anything in mind, in particular?"

Justin thought about it for a while but couldn’t come up with anything. The truth was, as a scientist, studying Immunology, he had never really taken an interest in a lot of new places nor had he bothered to go anywhere special. It just occurred to him now that maybe, this was one of his shortcomings with Betty. He thought of her note again. It flashed before his inner eye. “Sorry I was so hard on you. Good luck in Hawaii.” Was this reconciliation? Regardless, he knew, he had to call her as soon as he got to the hotel.

“Well?”, Helen asked politely. “You’ve been quiet for a while. Everything alright?”

Justin snapped out of his thoughts, as if he had just been awakened by a sergeant, throwing cold water in his face.

“Oh, eh… Yah, right! I… eh. It’s just. Apart from having looked forward to go to Honolulu for over a year, I haven’t actually given it that much thought, as to what I in fact wanted to see.” Justin chuckled with a just slightly awkward smile on his face. “Honestly, I am just glad, I get to clear my head from work.”

“Haha, that’s okay.”, she said with a smile on her face.

“But hey”, Justin continued. “you know the Island, I suppose. Maybe you just pick something, we could see? I trust your judgment.”

“Alright. What is your name, by the way?”

“Justin. Justin Avery.”

“Helen. Helen Garner. Nice to meet you!”

“You too.”
