Chapter #4

CHOICES

    by: Unknown
Helen sat quietly lost in her own thoughts, in an aisle seat across from the two men. She looked at them intently, trying to overhear what the younger man was saying, but her own thoughts intruded and kept her from really focusing on the outside world. She could not stop imagining the smell of the orchids and pineapple juice she knew would attack her nostrils the moment she stepped off the plane.

She could almost taste the sweet yellow liquid as she sipped from the paper cups the airport offered to it's guests. She would hold it in her mouth for a moment and then let it slid slowly down her throat savoring every drop. This made her think of the plate lunch she intended to buy the moment she got her rental car. She would head off for Grace's Lunch wagon the only intended stop, on the drive to Coco Head and the house. His house. No! It was her house now and her new life. A new life in familiar territory. Free of chaos and the hectic lifestyle she had lived since she graduated from the University of Hawaii.

She wondered if she still retained the distinction of a local, which was quite prestigious for a haole. She tried to remember how you spelled the Hawaiian word for it, K A M A I N A? or was it K A M A M H I N A? Neither was right, but she didn't recall if she ever knew how to spell it.

This caused her to realize she had a crossword puzzle in her bag and she decided to avoid anymore thoughts of the island she grew up on by diving deep into the puzzle or maybe even some Sudoku. She loved numbers, and numbers were how she made her living since college as the head accountant for a law firm on the mainland.

And now, considering all that her father had left her, the house, the cars, and the money, she would never have to do anything again except count and manage her inheritance. She was set for the rest of her life, you would think she would be happy.

But what would the rest of her life bring? Would it include Victor or should she seek out someone new? Should the whole slate be cleared? Should she rid herself once and for all from the control he had over her mind and body?

The man the kid across the aisle was talking to looked interesting. Maybe she should start up a conversation with him; he seemed disinterested in the conversation which had been forced upon him. Maybe she should just pull out the Sudoku puzzle and spend the next 5 hours oblivious to the others on the plane. Why would the man be interested in talking to her anyway. He didn't know her from Adam and probably didn't care to.

For some reason despite the fact that men always seemed more than interested in Helen, she herself did not feel attractive. This made Helen even more attractive to men. She did not see or hear what they saw or heard. She did not understand why anyone found her special in any way, especially Victor. Victor who had it all. A great law practice, a lot of money, a beautiful wife and daughter and Helen, who was there everytime he beckoned her. Yes, Victor. She knew Victor was her biggest mistake thus far in life.

She opened her bag and removed the Sudoku puzzle book and promptly dropped her pencil on the floor of the plane and it rolled toward the men she had been watching.

You have the following choices:

1. Does Helen speak to the men?

2. Does Helen merely thank them for retrieving the pencil and go on with her Sudoku
