Chapter #6

Getting to the slide/raft at the front

    by: Unknown
Justin didn't know it, but he was seated in the very last row of the front half. Terrible screams and shouting were barely audible above the rushing wind and rain. A woman in front of him was screaming at her panicking husband not to take his seatbelt off. Justin never saw what happened to his seatmate, Spider. When the plane broke in two, Spider and the red-headed flight attendant were sucked out into the night sky, never to be seen again. Justin grabbed the oxygen mask and it on his face. At 35,000 feet, he knew that without the oxygen mask on, he would black out. A few people have already passed out from the thin air. It was hard to judge how fast the plane was falling, but Justin knew that once they reached the 10,000 feet mark, the air would be easier to breathe. Justin's mind raced with possible scenarios of how to survive the plane crash.

He knew they were somewhere over the ocean, and thanks to his photographic memory, he recalled a lifejacket was stowed under his seat. The slide/raft was actually part of the door near the front. Justin did not want to unbuckle his seat, but someone had to get to the front door and deploy the raft just before the plane hit the water. Justin tried to look down, but the night sky and the ocean were one and it was impossible to discern between the two. He said a quick prayer under his breath, took the oxygen mask off, and wrapped his feet around the seat legs in front of him. He unbuckled his seat belt and crouched down close to the floor, grabbing the seat legs as he made his way up the aisle. It became strangely quiet as they hit the warmer air above the ocean. People have stopped screaming. Most have already passed out. A few were just frozen in their seats, unable to move. Justin knew time was running out and he had to time it exact. Too early, and the raft will go flying out in the sky. Too late will mean a watery grave for those still on the plane.

A huge fireball exploded in the sky. Justin correctly assumed it was the back half of the plane. It lit up the whole sky, and Justin quickly looked for the ocean through the front door. They were barely a thousand feet away. He shouted to everyone that he will release the emergency exit raft just before the plane hits the water. Justin counted under his breath. He would have to get the raft out when they're barely 100 feet above the ocean. Otherwise it would end up being too far to swim to.

A woman with brown hair and pale freckles in the front row unbuckled her seat belt. She came up behind Justin and grabbed his waist. Justin could feel her hands and arms shaking. Everyone else remained in their seats, watching Justin. They were too scared to unbuckle their seat belts, and Justin couldn't believe they have already accepted their watery fate.

It was time to go. Justin closed his eyes and hoped this would work. If not, at least he knew he tried his best. He released the door handle and activated the slide/raft. The slide/raft inflated within two seconds.
